Marc van Hasselt
Data Scientist & Smart Mobility Consultant

What were you doing before signing up for our Data Analytics course?

Before Ubiqum, I was the technical director of a car-sharing company in Amsterdam. After this job, I started doing consultancy work, together with a friend from university, focussing on the smart mobility sector. We helped car sharing companies to more clearly define their strategy to be able to differentiate amongst competitors, for example.

Why did it seem like the right moment in your life to sign up for the course?

I have an academic quantitative background, but after my university years I worked in different management roles, and moved away from the more quantitative type of roles. However, in the last few years, whilst working in consulting, I increasingly faced business challenges with a data component at its core.
More importantly, I realised that I really enjoyed solving these data-related challenges, however, having worked in non-quantitative roles, I lacked some coding skills and the confidence to offer some more advanced data analytics to our clients. So, I thought it would be a good idea to gain these data coding skills.

Looking back, I can say that the course helped me transform a personal interest into a professional career, which is amazing!

What was your main concern before starting?

My main concern was that I wouldn’t generate income for 5 to 6 months, since it’s a full time course. On the other hand, I knew it would be worth it in the long run because it enabled me to do work I really enjoy doing, while also being able to help my clients even better in their business efforts.

Why did Ubiqum Code Academy stand out as the best option?

I was looking into data analytics courses as I wanted to learn Python. I found out that Ubiqum had just opened an office in Amsterdam, right around the corner from my house. I also liked the Learn by Doing methodology as I knew it would help me learn how to code in a highly practical way.

Do you think our Learn by Doing methodology has been effective?

It’s been very effective. I think the Learn by Doing is extremely effective to quickly gain solid skills and become confident in using those skills. For some parts of the course, I would have liked a little bit more theory, as it’s my natural tendency to also want to understand the theoretical basis to a certain degree.

Would you recommend Ubiqum and if so, why?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend Ubiqum’s data analytics course, because I have experienced that their methodology is a very effective way of learning these skills. Adding to that, I very much liked the culture of Ubiqum where everyone was eager to help each other; the friendly environment helps students to learn from each other.
