Data Analysts at Sogeti
What were you doing before you signed up for our course?
I worked as a Project Manager and Data Analyst in Barcelona for a marketing agency, carrying out marketing campaigns for the big consumer companies in Spain.
What motivated you to start the course?
In my old job, analysing data from marketing campaigns and data from surveys was the part that I enjoyed most. But I could only dedicate a small part of my time to this and I wanted to dedicate 100%. I found out about Ubiqum through an advertisement and began to inquire about who they were and what they did. I liked the idea of learning how to analyse large amounts of data and use specific tools such as WEKA or the programming language of R. My main motivation was to find a job as a full-time Data Analyst.
Now that you've finished, what did you find most difficult about course?
When we started learning R it was difficult to write clean, readable, and working code because I have not programmed since my time at my university, where I only learned a little about Stata language. But with the help of the mentors, peers and many tutorials, I managed to solve all the problems I encountered.
Do you think that our methodology has worked? - Why would you recommend Ubiqum?
The methodology works but needs something else: a great amount of motivation, dedication and commitment on the student’s part. At Ubiqum, it is not worth "studying the day before the exam", first because there are no exams, and second because the learning process is gradual. You could spend an entire afternoon struggling to understand something, go home without having understood it, but the next day, at 9am you go back to it and in 20 minutes you've cracked it! This is because your mind has had time to process everything previously learned and the concept doesn't seem so complex. I don't know how to explain it, but whoever has experienced it will agree with me.
I have done very well and I plan to continue with the methodology "learning by doing" to further expand on what I’ve learned to better myself for my new job.
Speaking of your new job, what do you think, are you happy?
Today is my last day at Ubiqum and in a week I will start work in my new job. I therefore can't say how it will go, although the first interviews went very well and I will be able to decide which tools to use since it is in a new department in a large international company.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to make a change in their professional life?
First, think seriously about whether you can give the next 20 weeks to the course. If so, great, you'll be here Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Next, have an attitude that shows that you are sure about the change, because if you believe it yourself, those around you (the interviewer, mentor, colleagues ...) will also believe in you.
And finally, come with an open mind and take full advantage of the resources that Ubiqum provides and if you have moments of difficulty, speak to the mentors or colleagues because they can all help you to achieve your goals.
To conclude, how would you describe your Ubiqum experience?
It has been an enriching experience on a professional and personal level since you are in contact with people who have very different backgrounds to you. As everyone has the same objective, you can assist each other and contribute unique knowledge. Just as I did, you will learn many things that will properly prepare you to start a long-term successful career.
