In the IT and tech sector, there is always work and there are always opportunities to advance professionally. You’re never going to find yourself stagnant. The only way is up, economically and professionally.Rubén Peregrina Aroca
When did you do the Full Stack Java Development Program?
I was one of the first people to do the course back in 2016.
Where did you get hired and where are you working now?
When I finished the course, it took me about a month to find a job as a full stack developer, and I’m still working in the same company. People know it as RocketRoi but they recently changed their name to Spaceboost and they work in PPC automation for businesses. When I started, there were 30 people working in the company and now there are 50.
As a full stack developer, I do everything from marketing the web page to connecting it to a database.
What were you doing before signing up for our course?
I was working as a mechanic in a garage. Though I had no programming experience, I’ve always been curious when it comes to computers, the internet, and other technologies. However, I also thought that learning to code or program software would be too difficult for me and would require many years of studying.
I wasn’t necessarily unhappy in my job, I liked working as a mechanic, but at the same time, I knew I didn’t want to do it for the rest of my life and that in making a career change I could be better off.
One day I was working in the garage and I heard someone from Ubiqum speaking on the radio. It really sparked my interest and I got in touch.
Why did Ubiqum Code Academy stand out as the best option?
It didn’t take much to convince me. As soon as I came to Ubiqum and met the people behind it, I knew I wanted to take the course.
Did you have any concerns?
I actually wasn’t sure that I’d be able to finish the program or that I’d be able to get my head around it all. Though, once you complete the first project, which is to create your first website, you feel quite proud and impressed by what you’ve achieved in such a short space of time.
Do you think our Learn by Doing methodology has been effective?
I spent the first few days extremely lost. I had no idea what was going on and this was really frustrating. Programming isn’t easy to learn, you have to be motivated and put in the work. However, if you do, you end up learning a great deal.
The Learn by Doing methodology was completely new to me as, like most people, my experience in traditional education was quite different. At Ubiqum, no one ever stood up in front of the class and lectured for an hour, instead, we had to look for the logic ourselves and actually program. After all, later, when you’re working, this is exactly how it is. It prepares you really well for the workplace.
How well did Ubiqum prepare you for your new career as a full stack developer?
Very well. Learning to program on Ubiqum’s Full Stack Course gives you the experience and toolset to successfully land a job and go on to learn other technologies by yourself. Because it’s highly practical, what you learn at Ubiqum can be applied from day one in your new job as a developer.
What would you say to someone who is considering changing sectors and going into tech?
It’s not easy. It’s a pretty radical change, at least it was for me, and it’s difficult to accept that all that you’ve done until now, all that you’ve studied, all the training and years you’ve invested, won’t be relevant. Like many people, I also had the economic pressure of having to support myself for 5 months whilst on the course and I had no idea if I’d even be able to find a job afterwards. But I managed it and it didn’t take me long to find a job.
In the IT and tech sector, there is always work and there are always opportunities to advance professionally. You’re never going to find yourself stagnant. The only way is up, economically and professionally. Now that I’ve been working as a developer for over a year, I’m constantly receiving emails and requests on LinkedIn. It opens so many doors.
Would you recommend Ubiqum and if so, why?
100%. With Ubiqum, you’re not just another student. They really care about you and it shows. It’s like being part of a family.
