The results have been amazing. I’ve found a job that pays me double what I was earning as an English teacher!Andy Padel
Congratulations on your new job! Where will you be working?
I’ll be working for a company called Criteo, who create targeted, automated advertisements using machine learning and big data. I’ve been hired as a developer, though I’ll also be managing accounts for them. I’m really excited, especially because the offices have a great view of the beach!
What were you doing before signing up for our course?
Back in the UK, where I’m from, I was working at a startup giving developers feedback and managing accounts, then when I moved to Barcelona, I became an English teacher. I always knew I didn’t want to be an English teacher long term, but it was something to get me by while I figured out the next steps to take toward a more fulfilling career.
Why did it seem like the right moment in your life to sign up for the course?
I didn’t see English teaching as a solid career path and as I had worked with developers in the past a career in web development appealed to me. I wanted something that I could apply to any job in the IT sector, so I started to look into courses and that’s how I found Ubiqum. The results have been amazing; I’ve found a job that pays me double what I was earning as an English teacher! It’s been such a worthwhile investment for me.
What was your main concern before starting?
My main concern was not being able to learn enough in time and not being able to find a job after investing so much time and money. Afterall, I had to support myself whilst doing the course and thinking about the “what if’s” was stressful. But now I’m about to start a career I’m really pleased with and the investment has definitely paid off.
Why did Ubiqum Code Academy stand out as the best option?
I really liked the Ubiqum blog, specifically the interviews with mentors and the articles about all the students from various backgrounds who’d all started from scratch, like myself. It was really encouraging! I had all these doubts but looking at the website and after having a long conversation with Alex, one of the mentors, I felt like Ubiqum really cared about my well-being and it sounded like a great place to start.
What were your expectations/what were you hoping to get out of it?
I really liked the fact, that, with this type of job, it would allow me to have a much more flexible work schedule in the future, and that I would be working in the IT industry. I was expecting to find a better job with a better salary, which I did. So my expectations were definitely met.
Do you think our Learn by Doing methodology has been effective?
I’m a big fan of the Learn by Doing methodology, though I struggled to get to grips with it initially, once I started to accustom myself to this way of learning I got a real sense of achievement. As a developer in the real world you would have to figure things out for yourself, so it’s a really good method and one you can apply in any situation.
How helpful did you find the Career Placement service?
The Boosting My Career program was very helpful, especially with the transition from learning for four months to thinking about working in a real workplace and a whole new sector where the interview process is quite different. For example, I had an interview with four people, which I had never experienced before. I had also never had to pass a technical interview before, but the Career Placement team helped a lot.
Would you recommend Ubiqum and if so, why?
It’s a really nice atmosphere to work in and very motivating. You have your mentors and team leaders, who give you a lot of support, but at the same time they don’t hold your hand. It really felt like a real work environment, being in a team and working towards a goal together. If you could see how far I’ve come in the past five months it’s really crazy. I’ve made this huge career change and can now see a bright future ahead. I would definitely recommend Ubiqum.
